How flat towing approval works

1. The drivetrain decidesMost approved vehicles are 4x4s with a two-speed transfer case that shifts to Neutral, letting the wheels turn without spinning the transmission.
2. Trim mattersThe same model can be approved in 4x4 and not in 2WD or AWD. Match your exact drivetrain, not just the name.
3. The manual is finalYour owner's manual's Recreational or Dinghy Towing section is the last word, including any engine-run or speed rules.

Flat towing FAQ

What does it mean to flat tow a car?

Flat towing (also called dinghy or four-down towing) means towing a car, Jeep, SUV or truck behind your motorhome with all four wheels on the road. The towed vehicle connects to the RV with a base plate and tow bar, plus safety cables, a wiring kit for the lights and a supplemental braking system.

Which vehicles are easiest to flat tow?

The Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Gladiator, Ford Bronco and most 4x4 pickups with a two-speed transfer case (Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado and Colorado, GMC Sierra and Canyon, Ram 1500) are the most popular because the transfer case can be shifted to Neutral.

Can I flat tow an all-wheel-drive or automatic car?

Sometimes. Many AWD vehicles and modern automatics (including most CVTs and 8- to 10-speed automatics) can't be flat towed because the transmission isn't lubricated when the engine is off. A few, like the Chevy Blazer and Trailblazer AWD and Ford's hybrids, are approved with a specific procedure. Always follow your owner's manual.

Can I flat tow an electric vehicle?

No current EV is approved by its manufacturer for flat towing. Use a car trailer instead.

Do I need a braking system on my towed car?

Ford and GM both call for a separate, working braking system on the towed vehicle, and many states and provinces require one above certain weights. Check the laws for every state on your route.
